More than 125 images tell hotel's impressive story of continuous reinvention and rebirth
BETHLEHEM, PA - November 19, 2013 - A glossy new 120-page coffee table book celebrating the more than 90-year history of Historic Hotel Bethlehem will be the subject of a book-signing event this Saturday, November 23 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the hotel's lobby.
Managing Partner Bruce Haines worked with the hotel staff's historian Natalie Bock, who researched every aspect of the book, which is entitled simply "Historic Hotel Bethlehem." It starts with the founding of the city by the Moravians, the Eagle Hotel, which stood on the same site, the construction of the Hotel Bethlehem in 1922, Bethlehem Steel's subsequent acquisition and sale, and ends with its present day success. Even the hotel's ghosts - Francis "Daddy" Thomas, May Yohe, and Mrs. Phillip Brong - get their own page.
Haines and Bock then worked with history and biographer James Crutchfield to turn the historical facts into an engaging portrait of words, and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Robin Hood to capture the essence of the hotel and community today. It was designed by Robertson Design, Inc. of Franklin, Tenn. and published by Hood's publishing company, Grandin Hood Publishers, also of Franklin.
It retails for $45 and is for sale at The Shoppe at Hotel Bethlehem on the lower level. Guests who purchase a book on Saturday can have it signed by Haines, Crutchfeld and Hood.
Its pages are filled with many memories that Lehigh Valley residents and past and present visitors will delight in. Images include everything from past owners, managers and guests, to dinner menus, postcards, and room bills. Photos of the transformations of key hotel spaces like the Terrace, Mural Ballroom, Grand Ballroom and Tap Room are featured throughout. It concludes with a pictorial spread of downtown Bethlehem's many sites and events followed by the hotel's classic holiday decorations.
The project was a labor of love for Haines, who is one of several Lehigh University graduates who partnered to found Christmas City Hotel, LLC, which restored and reopened the hotel in September 1999. He even served as interim general manger for several months in 2005 before current General Manager Dennis Costello joined the property's management team.
