Originally an 18th century Moravian farm, the Plantation demonstrates farming methods between 1748 and 1848, a time of great change in agriculture. In 1777, as the British were about to seize Philadelphia there was fear that the King's Army would destroy the great bell in Independence Hall that symbolized the American Republic. The bell was removed and hidden for nearly a year in a Church, where the memorial stands today.
